Joseph K. Morey was the son of Cyrus Morey, a native of New York and Elizabeth Martin Morey. Cyrus was a Methodist Episcopal Minister, he started preaching the Iowa conference in 1855. His first appointment in Troy. He continued working the conference until his death on the 27th of Mar. 1890. Elizabeth Martin was a native of Ohio. Joseph's sister, Nancy Elizabeth Morey Cain (Mrs. M. J.) lived in Poweshiek County.
Joseph K. Morey was a lawyer by profession. He entered the Civil War as a member of the 6th Iowa Vol. Infantry but after he was wounded at Shiloh, he transferred and became a member of the Eighteenth Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Joseph Morey was well known in Centerville for his great courage and strong leadership qualities in battle. He married Jennie L Sturgeon on Dec. 1, 1861 in Appanoose Co., Iowa. Joseph died soon after the war. Jennie Morey filed for a Widows pension on April 30, 1866.
