He was born January 12, 1927, at the Osteopathic Hospital in Kirksville, Missouri, to Ruth (Keller) Holman and John Holman. He grew up in Pittsburg. His parents later divorced when Jack was still a baby. He was raised by his mother and later, from about age four, also by his stepfather, Raymond C. Smith, who started a building materials business at 16th and Grand Streets in Pittsburg.
As a small child, Jack and his family lived at 405 E. Adams St. in Pittsburg, later moving to 1601 N. Grand, Pittsburg, next to the family business. He attended Washington School, Lincoln School and Pittsburg High School where he graduated at the age of 16 in 1943.
Jack left Pittsburg for Detroit the day after his high school graduation, living a short time with his aunt and uncle, Jesse and Faye Wells, and his two cousins, Neil and Don Wells.
He worked in a small tool manufacturing shop until joining the U.S. Navy in 1945. Jack was sent to electronic technicians training schools in Chicago, Detroit and Corpus Christi, Texas and also went to the Marshall Islands during his stint in the Navy. He received an honorable discharge in 1946.
He attended KS State Teachers College, Pittsburg, Wayne State University in Detroit and the University of Michigan Banking School in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Jack spent 40 years in the life insurance business, first as an independent agent with his own company, the Jack Holman Agency in Detroit, then in various positions with the Michigan Life Insurance Company in Royal Oak, Michigan. He started there as a general agent, and worked his way up to being vice president of the financial institutions division, where he was responsible for sales, service and product development for insured borrowers at banks, finance companies and auto dealers.
Jack married Mamie L. Hamilton in 1953 in Toledo, Ohio. They had one daughter Nancy G. Holman, and lived many years in Livonia, Michigan. They later divorced and Jack returned to Pittsburg, working as an independent life insurance agent.
He married Beverly J. Bolluyt in Pittsburg in 1985. They lived in Pittsburg until moving to rural McCune in 1988, then back to Pittsburg in 2002.
Jack retired from the life insurance business in 1996, but continued working in a house rental/contract sale business that he and his wife had started.
He was a long-time active member of a local Pittsburg 12-step group, and enjoyed continuous sobriety for a period of 34 years, from July, 1980 until the time of his death. He was helpful to many who suffered from the problems of drinking.
Jack is survived by his wife Beverly, of the home in Pittsburg, KS; his only daughter, Nancy G. Holman of rural McCune, KS; a first cousin, Neil Wells of Pittsburg, KS; 4 step-sons, Dan Gath of Weir, KS, Dwight Gath and his wife Candace of McCune, KS, Erik Gath and his wife Tonya of Weir, KS, Terry Gath and his wife Chris of Scranton, AR; and a step-daughter, Cindy Swanson of Wichita, KS, 8 step-grandchildren and 9 step-great-grandchildren.
He is loved by many. He will be greatly missed.
Mr. Holman has been cremated. A private family burial will be at a later date.
