Arby “Leon” Durnil completed his journey in life on October 1, 2014. He was born the youngest of three children in Long Island, Kansas, on February 14, 1937 to Murl Wyman Durnil and Ina Evangeline (Marvin) Durnil. He was preceded in death by his parents and older sister, Ardith Ponte. He grew up in Long Island, Kansas, and graduated from Long Island High School in 1955. While in school he played basketball, baseball and football. After high school he played baseball for a minor league team before attending Kansas State University. He graduated from Kansas State in 1960 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a minor in math. He was active in 4-H, FFA and was a member of the DeMolay in Phillipsburg, Kansas, the Masonic Lodge, Knights Templar and Shriners. After college, Leon worked for an accounting firm before going into the Air Force. He was stationed at Hulman Air Force Base in Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1961 as a personnel officer when he met Glenda Shafer, in her final year of nurses training. They were married in Indiana in 1962 and moved to Phillipsburg, Kansas. He remained in the Air Force Reserves and received an honorable discharge as a captain on May 25, 1972. He worked for Farm Bureau Insurance for 14 years before running his own insurance company for years. He worked as a stock broker and a Realtor and taught real-estate classes. He was at heart a salesman, selling insurance, real estate, cars and modular homes; he loved any job where he could interact with people. His last five years were spent working at Home Depot in Longmont, something he truly enjoyed. During the time his sons played baseball, Leon was active in the Loveland Baseball Association as a coach and member the Board of Directors. His love for baseball and youth sports continued into watching his grandchildren play sports. He loved hunting pheasant and quail in Kansas and fishing for anything in Colorado. He was a huge Broncos fan, and was very proud to be a long term member of the Veterans Association. Services will be held at Loveland Good Samaritan Chapel on October 23rd, a reception at noon followed by a memorial at 1:00 pm. Inurnment with military honors will take place at Loveland Burial Park immediately following. Please dress comfortably, as this is a celebration of Leon’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Loveland Baseball Association, which will go to scholarships for players in need of financial assistance. Leon believed anyone who wanted to play baseball should be able to play. Send in care of Kibbey Fishburn Funeral Home.
