Betty J. Rea, 87 of Valley City passed away Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Plum Creek Assisted Senior Living in Brunswick surrounded by her family.

Betty is survived by her loving children David, Valley City, Douglas (Deborah) of Valley City and Jan (Thomas) Hablitzel of Hudson; grandchildren Justin (Megan) Rea of Brunswick, Charlie (Heather) Rea of Springboro, OH, Amy Hablitzel of Hudson, Heather Rea of Brunswick and Evan Hablitzel of Hudson. Great granddaughter Aurora (Rory) Serenity Rea of North Ridgeville. Nephews- Alan (Shannon) Lurkins of Vandalia, IL; Brad (Tammy) Lurkins of Greenville, IL; Niece Jean (Donald) Doll of Greenville and their children all whom loved visits from Aunt Betty and Uncle Johnny when they traveled “home” to Illinois.

Betty Jean Motzer was born on October 19, 1926 in Greenville, IL to the late Charles Raymond and Julia Gertrude (nee Nolan) Motzer. She graduated from Greenville High School in 1944 and was married to John Rea, Jr. on October 21, 1944. They enjoyed more than 54 years of marriage until his death on February 10, 2000. They were stationed in Atlanta, GA and Corpus Christi Naval Air Station during John’s service in the U.S. Navy. After WWII, they moved to Flat Rock, MI, where all of her children were born. On May 1, 1966, they moved to Valley City and Betty called it home for the last 48 years. Betty was active in the Valley City Garden Club, Buckeye Boosters Club; Thursday Morning Women’s Golf League at Valley Forge GC (nee Cherokee Hills) and especially enjoyed being a member of Women’s Fellowship at Emmanuel United Church of Christ in Valley City where she had many, many friends who she loved very much. She was the Chamber Manager of the Brunswick Chamber of Commerce in Brunswick for many years and was the organizer and one of the founders of Brunswick’s Old Fashioned Days. Her hobbies included toile painting and ceramics for which she had a great talent.

She was preceded in death by her only sibling Nina Marie (Darrell) Lurkins and a niece Betty (nee Stewart) Bohn

Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, September 8, 2014 at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, 6656 Center Road Valley City, Rev. Bert Ambrose, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Myrtle Hill Cemetery, Valley City, OH The family will receive friends, to celebrate Betty’s life, Sunday, September 7, 2014 from 4:00-7:00PM at the Bauer Funeral Home 2089 Columbia Road Valley City.
