Vera married Dwight Smart in 1952, and they had two sons, Craig and David. Vera and Dwight later divorced.
Vera married Elvel (Al) Hill in 1962. Both Vera and Al were passionate about music. They sang in the Chancel Choir of Boise’s First United Methodist Church, and were members of the Boise Showtimers and performed in numerous community music programs. She never lost her love for music and was completely thrilled with her nearly front-row seat at the 2012 Josh Groban concert in Boise.
Vera worked for KGEM Radio and was office manager for many years at the Royal Restaurant in Boise. In 1978, Vera and Al moved to Hailey, Idaho, and in 1985, relocated to McCall after Al’s retirement from Idaho Power Company. It was during this time they started cross-country skiing, and also enjoyed exploring the area. They were thrilled to show visiting family and friends parts of Idaho that they both loved, as well as traveling extensively until Al’s sudden death in 1989. Shortly after that, Vera returned to Boise to be close to family, portraying a strong “survivor” image to family and friends - - she even put “Sur5r” on her car’s license plate.
Vera is preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by her sons, Craig Smart (Teresa) and David Smart; and stepchildren, Deanna Mendiola (Carlos), Steve Hill (Judy), and Carol Warren (Bob). Vera was a very proud and loving grandmother to her 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandson, providing them many wonderful memories of her. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Aletha Hill, and several nephews and nieces.
A memorial service and celebration of Vera’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 13, 2014, at Cloverdale Funeral Home, 1200 North Cloverdale Road, Boise, ID. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Vera’s name to the Assistance League of Boise, 5825 N. Glenwood Street; Boise, ID 83714, or a favorite charity.
