MARY R. FINNERTY, 89, of Middletown, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, October 12th at her home. She was born Mary R. Cooke on May 19, 1925. Contrary to her favorite song, Mary was not born in Hoboken, but in Jersey City. She was an active Hoboken resident for many years, before moving to Middletown in 1987. She was a graduate of St. Michael's H.S. in Union City, class of 1943, and was still active in organizing her class reunions. After graduating H.S., Mary worked for the newspaper "The Sign" and soon after, worked at the Erie Lackawanna Railroad, until her children were born. Mary was a Past Grand Regent of the Catholic Daughters of America Court Santa Rita in Hoboken. While living in Middletown, she was an active member of the Middletown Senior Citizens Center, where she had been honored on many occasions for volunteering. Her piano playing will be sadly missed. Besides playing the piano, some of her favorite activities were: becoming an accomplished tennis player, holding the title of reigning "Family Beer Pong Champ", and she also enjoyed a game of golf on cloudy days. Mary was also known for her creativity in writing songs, jingles, and odes, for many of her beloved friends and family. It was always an honor to have "Aunt Mary" write something on your behalf. The love of her family and friends was always shown during her Birthday celebrations at Murphy's Tavern, in her beloved town of Rumson, where she spent every summer. She was predeceased by her parents, Sarah Agnes (Drennan) and Joseph Francis Cooke, her beloved husband, Francis John Finnerty, and her dear brothers, Stephen Cooke and his wife Ruth, Joseph Cooke and his wife Dorothy, Robert Cooke and his wife Leslie, Eugene Cooke, Gerard Cooke and his wife Pat, and Arthur Cooke. Mary is survived by her loving children, Mary Hoffman and her husband Robert of Hazlet, Regina Placanica and her husband Vincent of North Port, FL, Francis J. Finnerty and his wife Maureen of Hazlet, Theresa Conway and her husband Martin of Hazlet and Patrick Finnerty and his wife Gail of Belford, along with her sister-in-law, Rita Cooke, and her cherished grandchildren, Lauren, Robyn, Keri, Frank, Tim, Patrick and Michael. She will be sadly missed, but never forgotten. Family and friends are invited to visit on Wednesday, October 15th from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9 PM and Thursday morning, October 16th, time TBA, at the Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 3269 State Rt. 35 N, Hazlet. Mass of Christian Burial, Thursday morning, October 16th, St. James R.C. Church, Red Bank, time TBA. Entombment, Mount Olivet Cemetery, Red Bank/Middletown.
