Major League Baseball Player. The 6-foot-3 left-handed hitter is best known for blasting a 560-foot homer over the 40-foot high center-field fence at Seals Stadium in San Francisco off Seattle's Sig Jakucki during a Pacific Coast League game on April 19, 1947. To honor his achievement, the Seals placed a star with his name on it where the ball left the stadium. He was a star player in the PCL for many years and, at age 33, got his only big-league taste with the Cincinnati Reds in 1955. He hit .111 (2 for 18), all as a pinch hitter. He had four runs batted in and walked once. The only game he started was a mid-season exhibition game against the Detroit Tigers, and he responded with a double and a homer. The Chicago White Sox had purchased his contract when the 1942 season ended, but Brovia was called into the military and served three years in Europe. He was inducted into the PCL Hall of Fame in 2005 along with league presidents Clarence "Pants" Rowland and Bill Cutler, pitchers Ray Prim, Elmer Jacobs and Jack Salveson and outfielder John Frederick.
