Private George Lawlis was from Indiana and was a member of the 140th Infantry, Company D. George's marriage and our family records show his middle initial as "W" but his headstone shows "H".

George was the brother of Sarah Ann, Peter Benton, Abraham, Elizabeth, Andrew Jackson, James, and Daniel Webster Lawlis. George married his first cousin, Sara Jane Lawlis. They had two sons, Joseph Martin (Mart), and James Owen Lawlis. Sara Jane was the Daughter of Abraham Lawlis who was George's Uncle. After George's untimely death, Sarah Jane, left with two young sons remarried Andrew Jackson Jordan, who was a widower and had children of his own.
