He was the eldest of nine children and is survived by seven of his brothers and sisters. He was widowed (Bertha) in 2007. He is survived by his second wife, Cleo Lounsberry Sykes, his daughters Janet Savia (Steve) and Judy Durham (Michael), and his granddaughter, Lindsey Durham.
Tom's faith was straightforward and honest, and it influenced his work ethic, his relationships, and all that he valued in life. He began his business career with Dossey's Service Station, and then progressed to Leak Insurance, Ocala Insurance and Investment, CE Winston Insurance, Griffin Insurance, Allstate Insurance and Hawthorne Insurance. He was a member of the Ocala and the Florida Associations of Independent Insurance Agents. Through the years, he was active in Ocala Exchange Club, Gideons International, Florida Orange Growers Association, and Florida Cattlemen's Association. Tom was a 32nd degree Mason and a 50 year member of the Island Grove Masonic Lodge. He was most recently a deacon and usher at First Baptist Church of Ocala.
Memorial service will be at 2:00PM on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Home, 910 E. Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Gideons International.
