He is listed in the 1892 census as living in Hornellsville and describes his occupation as a lumberman. His wife Adeline is listed as age 46 and daughter Lora as 19 years of age. He and his wife are still in Hornellsville in the 1900 census and their daughter is now Lora Makeley. In 1902 he attended the funeral for his sister Sally Ann Norton Howlett in Freedom NY and is described in the obituary as being from Almond.
"S. S. Norton died very suddenly Wednesday morning at his home a short distance from the village. He seemed in his usual health in the morning, but was stricken with heart trouble and died about 10 o'clock. He was 80 years old and leaves a wife and one daughter, Mrs. Daniel Makeley, to mourn their loss. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at the home. Burial in Hornell."
