Major League Baseball Player. He was a 6-foot-3 left-handed pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1938 and the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1940 to 1943, but he was a switch-hitting first baseman-outfielder for the Boston Braves in 1944. On the mound, his lifetime totals were 17-19 with a 4.24 earned run average with nine complete games in 29 starts and two shutouts. He played 72 games at first base, 22 in the outfield and once on the mound in 1944. He hit .273 (100 hits in 356 at-bats) that year and drove in 36 runs. He got into only one game for the Braves in 1947. He batted .222 lifetime as a pinch hitter (8 for 36). He managed Brooklyn's St. Paul affiliate from 1956 to 1959 and then he scouted for the Dodgers. He then became a longtime high school and college basketball referee in Kentucky.
