But he had enough left in the tank to be part of the Essendon team that won the first VFL premiership. He was deemed to be the Champion of the Colony in 1891, and while he had a strong and fearsome approach on the field he had a kind nature off it. In a factory once he offered to give up his job to a married man who had been retrenched.
