Michael R. Owens, 64, of Washington, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Friday at the Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington.

Michael was born in Burns City, to Harlan and Louise Owens.

He graduated from Indiana State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education in 1972 and was a graduate of North Knox High School in 1968.

In 1974, he married his best friend and love of his life Arlene Turnpaugh of Kentland. Michael served as a lieutenant in the Indiana National Guard and worked for Farm Bureau Insurance as an insurance agent for 39 years.

Over the past 40 years, the couple welcomed three children into their home and Michael set about teaching his family the value of hard work, discipline, loyalty and sportsmanship. His children remember him as a kind and loving father who encouraged them to pursue their goals with integrity and a smile. Michael's favorite saying was "LIFE IS GOOD."
Michael was a positive and wise man who was accomplished at many things. He was a generous and enthusiastic individual who loved to play tennis, hunt, fish, plant trees, tinker, organize and clean. Michael was passionate about his family, friends and helping others in need. He was an active and dedicated member of the Senior Family Services (president), YMCA board, Rotary Club, Moose Lodge, NRA, Ducks Unlimited, and volunteered with the Physically Challenged Bow Hunters of America, along with many other organizations.

Michael is survived by his wife Arlene Owens of Washington; three sons, Gregory and Julie Owens of Washington, Brent and Gina Owens of Harrison, Ohio, Jeffrey and Courtney Owens of Washington; seven grandchildren, Fischer, Wyatt, Ayla, Ridge, Leah, Abram and Cooper; four brothers: Ross and Barb Owens of Clayton, New York, Ed and Pam Owens of Bicknell, Jay and Nancee Owens of Avon and Mark and Liz Owens of Oaktown; two sisters, Lora and Herman Smith of Huntsville, Alabama, and Lisa Trinkle of Lawrenceville, Illinois; and several nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

A funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Antioch Christian Church in Washington, with a reception to follow. Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday and 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday at Antioch Christian Church. Pastor Keith Meece will officiate the celebration ceremony.
