His father the Baron Raoul de la Vigerie, was an artillery officer, and his mother, Jeanne Masson-Bachasson de Montalivet, was granddaughter of Count Camille de Montalivet, Minister of the Interior under Louis-Philippe I of France. François was brought up in Paris, and at the Chateau de Rançay, Niherne, Indre, France. D’Astier was an officer, and a pilot in World War I, earning the Croix de Guerre. In 1940 he directed the Air Battle of France. In July 1940, d’Astier refused to obey Darlan’s order to attack British warships in Gibraltar, and was shortly removed from command. He joined “La Dernière Colonne”, a Resistance group. Joining de Gaulle, he was named commander of the French forces in the UK. In November 1944, he was made a “Compagnon de la Libération” and became France’s ambassador in Rio de Janeiro. He published, "Le ciel n’était pas vide", 1940, Paris, R. Juilliard 1952.
