John Mitchell Rogers, 80, Kokomo, passed away in his home on October 6, 2014 at 11:22 AM. He was born May 10, 1934 in Powell County Kentucky, to Matt and Hazel (Robbins) Rogers. On June 8, 1956, John married Shirley Elaine (Hurlburt). John and Shirley have four children.
John worked hard all his life at several different jobs. He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, Continental Steel, Cuneo Press, Midwest Plating, Firestone Tire (Peru), Shrock's Dri-Gas, Ray's Auto Parts, Lowery's Sinclair, Dura Coate Plating (Peru), he also drove a school bus for Maconaquah School Corp. for a few years.
John was the perfect example of a God loving man. In his spare time he ministered to prisons and nursing homes. He dearly enjoyed time spent with his family especially his grandchildren. He was a very compassionate man, with a great sense of humor and love for a good prank. John was a member of Mt. Zion Newlight Christian Church (Galveston) and he spent his entire life helping others.
Surviving is his wife, Shirley; 4 children Monte (Sue) Kendall (Russell), Converse, Calvin (Kandee) Rogers, Greenville, MI, Teresa (Jim) Thibeault, Peru, John (Manda) Rogers, Amboy; 14 grandchildren, Ryan Keith (Michelle) Kendall, Greentown, Patrick (Kaycee) Kendall, Greentown, Amanda (Tim) Braye, Ohio, Fawn (Sadrack) Julsant, Chicago, Wayne (Heather) Rogers, Michigan, Forrest (Cassie) Rogers, Michigan, Travis (Brittany) Thibeault, Kayla (Tony) Mutch, Peru, Rachel (Jerry Wayne) Jordan, Kokomo, Kristina Rogers (Willis Shallenberger), Kokomo, John Rogers Jr., Kokomo, Nikki (Alan) Walker, Kokomo, Buck Rogers, Kokomo; 21 great-grandchildren; 4 siblings, Ruth Rogers, Kokomo, Gertha Holder, Kentucky, Ishmael (Virginia) Rogers, Peru, Garnett Rogers, Arizona; 2 sister-in-laws, Linda (Jim) Lindley, Bev (Andrew) Miller; 1 brother-in-law, Floyd (Wanda) Hurlburt. John leaves several cousins, nieces and nephews all of which meant a lot to him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, a brother and 3 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 South Webster Street, with long time friend Pastor John Piotrowicz officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens, Kokomo
