Avery Viola Shirrell was born in Texas on January 26, 1875. She came to Santa Barbara with her family. She was the daughter of Thomas Shirrell, who was a blacksmith. She married (1) William Clinton Kellogg, who died October 18, 1898. She then married (2) John B. Pico, the son of Miguel Pico y Lopez, who was also a blacksmith like her father. Avery died at Ventura on March 11, 1973. Her first Husband, William Kellogg, and son, Eugene Shirrell Kellogg, are both buried in the Goleta Cemetery.
