Plattsburgh Republican June 24, 1911

Willis Lee Wever, one of Plattsburgh's most highly esteemed and respected citizens, died June 16 at about 11 o'clock p.m., at his home. His last illness was a brief one. Early Monday morning he was taken suddenly worse and since that time has been lingering, most of the time unconscious though at intervals showing signs of improvement which encouraged the more sanguine of those watching with him. Of his immediate family there were with him, his wife and daughter, with her husband Mr. Russell, and his brother, Mr. J.M. Wever and his sister, Mrs. Alfred Guibord. He passed away quietly after hour of unconsciousness.

Mr. Wever's health has been failing for some time and many years of the most unremitting labor in business has told upon him. A recent vacation of several months spent with Mr. and Mrs. Russell in Providence had improved his condition, and he insisted on going back to his work in the Merchants National Bank in spite of the remonstrances of family, brothers and many friends.

Mr. Wever was born in Watervliet, Berrien County, Michigan, in 1853, the son of Samuel H. Wever and Mary (Henderson) Wever. He came to Plattsburgh in 1865 and has resided here most of the time since then.

He wen into the banking business at an early age with Alfred Guibord in the First National Bank in Plattsburgh. Later when his brother J.M. Wever, formerly of the Vilas National Bank and Mr. Guibord of the First National organized the Merchants National he went into that bank, in which he has held highly responsible positions ever since. He was a director of the bank most of the time and was also cashier at the time of his death and had been for many years prior to that.

As a husband, father and brother, friend and citizen, his life was regulated on the highest plane and for probity and business conduct it was unexcelled.

Mr. Wever married Miss Eva Guibord, sister of the late Alfred Guibord, and they had one daughter Frances, wife of Ira O. Russell, of Providence. One sister, Mrs. Alfred Guibord and two brothers, Hon. J.M. Wever of Plattsburgh and Benjamin S. Wever of New York also survive him.

Mr. Wever was a member of the Maccabees and of the Uniform Rank of that order and of Relief Hose Company.

The Walter H. Benedict Post of the Grand Army of the Republic will also turn out and attend at the house and cemetery.
