Feb. 12, 1920

A death of a pioneer resident of this city, died Thursday at his home on Lincoln Ave. Interment was at Union Cemetery. He came here in the early 70’s from Woodfield, Ohio where he was born in 1839. He early identified himself with the interests and activities of Redwood and served as supt of streets here for many years, being elected each succeeding year with out opposition. About ten years ago, he and his wife moved to Lebanon, Oregon, where the deceased operated an electric light plant for a long time, finally returning to this city last year to spend his declining days.

Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife, Louise and three sons and two daughters J.B. Hughes, the eldest son is principal of the Oroville High School; Charles C. Hughes is the city supt. of schools at Sacramento; Merton L. Hughes is the manual training teacher at San Mateo High School, Mrs. Ada H. Caidwell is the dean of women at the San Diego State Normal School, Mrs. Frances H. Millsap of Lebanon, Oregon taught in many schools of the state up until her marriage a few years ago.
