Gibbs was the third child and second son of Benjamin Gibbs Shaffer and Cornelia Jaques. His WWI draft registration card describes him as being of tall stature with a slender build. He had blue eyes and black hair. Gibbs was an accountant like his father, but also opened the Shaffer Hardware Company at 248 King Street in Charleston in 1915. Along with his brother Frederick Richard Shaffer, it was a thriving business until a year after his death in 1922, when Frederick had to declare bankruptcy. Gibbs never married, resided at home, and enjoyed a full life with his family within their church community- The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. At age 39, he was the first and youngest child of the family to pass away. The attending physician was family friend, Dr. C. P. Aimar.
