Kathryn J. Mazza-Burns formerly of Connellsville

Kathryn Jo Mazza-Burns died in Las Vegas, Nev., on Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, after a brief illness. She was 62. Kathy was born Aug. 15, 1950, in Connellsville. She graduated from Connellsville Area High School with the class of 1968. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from California State College (now California University of Pennsylvania) and a Master of Arts in education from West Virginia University.

Kathy met her future husband, Gene Burns, in 1982, when they were neighbors in Henderson, Nev. They were married on July 21, 1984. Kathy was a teacher for 27 years until she retired in 2000.

She started her career as an elementary teacher in Connellsville and later became a reading specialist for Clark County Schools in Las Vegas, where she taught for more than 20 years. Her dedication gave the skill and love of reading to many children.

While Kathy enjoyed her tenure as a teacher, her own lifelong love of learning inspired her to travel the world. She and Gene took great joy in experiencing the cultures of other countries across the globe. Among her favorite sites was the medieval city of Carcassonne in southern France. She was a sports fan, with a special enthusiasm for tennis.

Kathy is survived by her husband of 28 years, Gene Burns, of Las Vegas, Nev.; her parents, Michael and Dolores Mazza, of Connellsville; a sister, Bonnie Mazza, of Long Beach, Calif.; and a brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Natalie Mazza, of Monessen. She is sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
