Loren Ray Murry, a former 58-year resident of Three Rivers, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, in Fresno County. He was 83.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Ash Mountain Rec Hall in Sequoia National Park. Ray was born November 3, 1930.
After graduating from Fresno High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard.
In 1954, he married his high school sweetheart, Maxine Mines. The couple recently celebrated their 60th anniversary.
In 1960, Ray and Maxine moved to Three Rivers, where he started his career with the National Park Service. He was known by many as “Radio Ray” in his job as communications specialist for Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.
His technological talents took him to national parks and government functions that needed radio communications, including presidential conventions and the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the USS Arizona in Hawaii.
Ray retired from the National Park Service in 1993. His immense community service included being chairman of the Volunteer Ambulance Committee, Sequoia Natural History Association, Valley Oak Credit Union, and Sierra King Homeowners Association. He was a member of Three Rivers Lions Club for nearly 40 years, serving as president in 1972-1973 and again in 1992-1993.
And he was elected to the Three Rivers School board of trustees, a post he held from May 1970 to November 1981. He was a member of the TRUS Foundation and, being Radio Ray, helped with the installation of McDowall Auditorium’s sound system, as well as worked the sound equipment each year for the school’s Halloween Carnival. As a result of his longtime service to Three Rivers School, he was awarded with the Man of the Year award by the PTA in 1995.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Maxine; his son, Steve, and wife, Linda Sue; two daughters, Lisa Wallace and Linda Ruckman and husband Kerry; two grandsons, Brandon Ruckman and wife Kayla and Christopher Ruckman; two great-granddaughters, Emma and Claire; sister Jonnie Phillips; and several nieces and nephews.
