DEATH OF JOHN HOLTBY
A Prominent Resident of Floyd – Long a Member of Methodist Church
FLOYD, July 10 = John Holtby, an old and respected resident of this town, died at his home at 11:30 p.m. Thursday from heart trouble, after having been in failing health for several weeks. He was born in Yorkshire, England, June 14, 1824, and came to America seven years later with his father, Thomas Holtby.
His mother, Margaret Hardy Holtby died before the family left England. They located in the town of Western. In 1844 they removed to Rome where they lived for ten years on the farm now included in the fair ground and County Home property. They returned to Western in 1843 where John was married Jan. 24, 1859 to Henrietta Conklin, who survives. He and his wife in 1866 moved to Ridge Mills where they located on the farm now known as the Dunham place, remaining six years. Thence, in 1872, they moved to this town, on the farm where Mr. Holtby has just died.
In politics he was a Republican. He had been a member of the First M. E. Church in Rome since 1844. He had always followed farming and was well known throughout the county.
Surviving, besides his wife, are the following children: Mrs. Elmer E. Evans, Rome; Mrs. Judd Gear, Cove Oregon; Mrs. Albert D. Pierce, Rome; John V. Holtby, Philadelphia, Pa.; also two sisters, Ann and Rachel Holtby both living in the town of Rome.
