"J""D" was the son of Arnold L. Walters of Dayton, and Della M. Hickson also of Dayton Ohio and he enlisted in the US Marine Corps on August 30 1965 in Cincinnati. He arrived in Vietnam on July 12 1968 where he as assigned to and served with Company E, 2d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of October the Battalion was under the operational control of the 7th Marines participating on Operation MAUI PEAK from the An Hoa Combat Base in Quang Nam Province

On November 11, a CH-46A helicopter from HMM-265 took off from a Landing Zone below the Company M, 7th Marines Combat Base on Hill 52 in Dai Loc District and collided with a UH-34D from HMM-362 that had been flying above the aircraft. Both helicopters crashed 1 kilometer southeast of Hill 52 near the hamlet of Ha Hha (2) north of the Vu Gia river with fourteen men being killed in the accident. One of the casualties was Cpl J.D. Walters who was killed by the multiple injuries he sustained.
