Hayek was the oldest of three sons from The Botanical Professor at the University of Vienna August von Hayek and Felicitas nee Juraschek. He was thru his mother's grandfather the great-cousin of Ludwig Wittgenstein. Eugen Böhm von Bawerk was a frequent vistior in the House of Von Hayek. Since Childhood Friederich (parents called him Fritz) he was interested in the fields of Minerals, Insects and Botanical. Later he became interested in fossils and in the Evolutiontheory. He lived in Freiburg im Breisgau from 1977 till his death in 1992. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1991. In 1994 a street in Florisdorf was named Hayekgasse in his honor.
