Peter Anthony Sterner, 97, of Duncannon, entered into eternal rest on Friday, October 10, 2014. He was born on October 1, 1917 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Henry & Helen (Donahue) Sterner.
Peter proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and then in the U. S. Air Force during WWII where he became a prisoner of war and was forced to participate in the Bataan Death March for which he received the Prisoner of War Medal and the Bronze Star. He spent over 2 years in a forced labor camp. After the war he continued to serve until his retirement. He was a member of both the Duncannon VFW 255 and American Legion 340.
After he retired from the military he worked for the Department of Agriculture retiring in 1975.
On December 6, 1945 Peter married the love of his life, Dorothy DeBiase. They spent 69 wonderful years together before his passing.
Peter was a member of the St. Bernadette's Parish in Duncannon.
Peter loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter.
Peter is preceded in death by his 2 brother: Joseph M. Sterner and John Sterner and his sister Lillian Pfaft.
Peter is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy (DeBiase) Sterner, his son Jai A. Sterner and wife Millie of Duncannon, his daughter Jo Sterner and husband Frank Pryor of Lewisberry, 2 grandchildren: Jodi and Darcy; 6 great grandchildren: Andrew, Anthony, Connor, Alexander, Owen and Benjamin; and his many nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at the Ronald C.L. Funeral Home from 10-11am. A committal service will take place afterwards with full military honors at Evergreen Cemetery in Duncannon. Father John Trigilio Jr. will officiate.
The Sterner family would like to express their sincerest appreciation to the all the staff at Heritage Harbor at Claremont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Hospice of Central PA for the care, compassion and support they provided.
