Gerald E. Bernard, 87, of New Vienna, passed away on Friday, Oct. 10, 2014 at Cape May Retirement Village. His wife, Helen Jean Engle Bernard, preceded him in death on July 5, 2011.
He was born on May 16, 1927 in Clinton County, a son of the late Lewis J. and Anna Mercer Bernard. He was a 1945 graduate of New Vienna High School.
Mr. Bernard was a lifelong crop and livestock farmer on his family farm. He was especially known for his hog business. He also raised registered quarter horses.
He was a member and past president of the Clinton County Farm Bureau, a member of the Ohio Farm Bureau Board of Trustees, and past director and first vice president of the Ohio Pork Council. He was also involved with Landmark and Producers Livestock Association.
He was a member of Fairview Friends Meeting in New Vienna where he served as the Sunday school superintendent and a Sunday school teacher. He was also involved with many reconstruction projects through the Friends Disaster Service.
He designed and built many park benches for, and in memory of, worthy souls. He shared his skills of photography with his family and a variety of publications, such as "Quaker Life" and "The Wilmington Friend."
Mr. Bernard was known for sharing his roses with many people in the community. He enjoyed deer and bird hunting.
He is survived by two daughters, a brother and two sisters-in-law; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, his son, Jim Bernard, and a brother, Glenn Bernard, are preceded in death.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19 at Fairview Friends Meeting, Antioch Road, New Vienna.
A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in Centerville Cemetery, Lees Creek.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Fairview Friends Meeting or to Leesburg Friends Meeting.
