Ernest Clifford Payne, 83, of High Point died Saturday October 11, 2014 at Genesis Triad Center.
Mr. Payne was born January 5, 1931, in Chickasha, OK, to the late James Denton Payne and Corda Estelle Cochran Payne. He completed his undergraduate work at Harding College in Searcy, AK and achieved his Masters’ in Speech at the University of Mississippi, Oxford, MS. Clifford married Emma Lou Johnston on June 14, 1955.
Clifford served in the ministry for more than 50 years, including 22 years in Toledo, OH, at Flanders Road Church of Christ, 10 years in Wichita, KS, at Emporia Avenue Church of Christ, and 5 years in Brunswick, GA, at Carteret Road Church of Christ. He and his wife retired to High Point and were members of the Deep River Church of Christ.
In addition to his wife, Emma, of 59 years, he is survived by daughters Gwyn Payne, Ivy Pruitt and husband, Tim, of High Point, sons Jeff Payne and wife, Cindy, of Garland, TX and Mike Payne and wife, Sherrie, of Mooresville, IN; other survivors include a sister Jimmie Wolford and husband Adrian of Mustang, OK and six grandchildren Justin Payne, Nathan Payne, Anna Germek, Andrew Payne, Taylor Payne and wife, Cara, and Rachel Pruitt.
Funeral will be 11:00 AM Wednesday in the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point officiated by David Galloway, minister of the Deep River Church, interment will follow at Floral Gardens Memorial Park.
Memorial donations may be directed to Deep River Church of Christ, designated for Eastern European Missions, 1214 Eastchester Drive, High Point, NC 27265.
