Richard Lee Winkles was probably buried in Kentucky near Perryville. During the Battle of Perryville, he was shot in his right thigh on 8 Oct 1862. There were so many injured during this battle that almost every building around Perryville was used to treat the wounded. There was little medicine or food in the area; and due to a severe drought, there was little water for medical purposes. One doctor wrote after the battle that he had gone for two days treating injured soldiers without being able to wash his hands. Because of the conditions, many soldiers on both sides died of their wounds. Richard Winkles survived for about 6 weeks before succumbing to his injury. Most of the Confederate soldiers were buried in unmarked and/or mass graves. It is likely that Richard Lee Winkles is buried in one of these.
