MANITO, ILLINOIS - James C. Hartness, 92, of Manito passed away at 11:25 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, at Heartland Nursing Home in Peoria.

The son of William and Martha Biggs Hartness was born Aug. 15, 1922, in Canton. He married Velma Trollope on Sept. 14, 1951. She preceded him in death on Nov. 3, 2002. (James died one day before their 63rd wedding anniversary)

Jim was retired from Local 1 as a sheet metal worker in Pekin.

He was a United States Army veteran, serving during World War II, and was a member of Roy L. Kings Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1232 in Pekin and Peoria Sportsman Club.

Left to cherish his memory is a nephew, Larry Hartness, who was his caregiver; sister-in-law, Grace Hartness of East Peoria; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ann Wegstein; and brothers, Tom, John and Bill.

Cremation has been accorded, and a graveside service will be held Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 1707 W. Chanute Road, Peoria, IL 61615; or the Alzheimer's Association in his name.

The Cremation Society of Mid-Illinois Co. Pekin/Peoria is assisting the family with arrangements.
