—Mrs. Frank H. Sears died this morning
at her home four miles west of Cortland.
The funeral will be held Friday at
11 o'clock.

Mary MacLachlan Sears was born in Kilfinan, Argyll and Bute Scotland, on September 28, 1843. She emigrated to America with her family (mother and father together with five siblings), from Glasgow, Scotland, departing on the sailing ship Dirigo on July 3, 1855. The ocean trip took "a little less than seven weeks" arriving in New York on August 16, 1855. The family then traveled to Ithaca, New York.
Mary's original surname was spelled McLachlan, but she changed it to MacLachlan sometime after her arrival and before her marriage in 1868.
