Charles, the son of Charles M. Freeland deceased, and Virginia G. Snouffer of Worthington OH, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on October 10, 1968 in Columbus OH. He arrived in Vietnam on April 4, 1969 and was assigned to Company K, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.


On May 10, during Operation Oklahoma Hills, Company K was under OPCON (operational control) of the 3d Battalion, 26th Marines and continuing the search for enemy base camps on the southern slope of Hill 974 in Thuong Duc District. Climbing up steep slopes from the valley below a platoon has hit with rifle and automatic weapons fire from camouflaged fortified positions. The initial sudden burst of hostile fire killed three Marines and wounded several others. Supporting arms were brought to bear on the fortifications, and then assaulted by the Marines.

PFC Freeland was one of the casualties; he was killed in action as a result of hostile enemy gunshot wounds.

Two Area Men Killed in Vietnam

A 19-year-old Worthington Marine and a 25-year-old Dublin soldier were listed among Vietnam Combat deaths by the Department of Defense Wednesday.
They were: Marine Pfc Charles (Jeff) Freeland of 7060 Westview Drive, Worthington, and Army 1st Lt. Lawrence E. Strayer husband of Mrs. Sharon Strayer of 7417 Sawmill Rd. Dublin.

OFFICIALS reported Freeland was killed by hostile sniper fire while on a search and clear mission about 20 miles southwest of Da Nang in the Quan Nam Province.

Freeland joined the Marines Oct. 1 and left for Vietnam March 30. He attended Worthington High School and was a former employee of the Debs Hospital Supplies Inc. of 2325 Wood Ave."

"FREELAND is survived by his mother, Mrs. Virginia Snouffer, stepfather, Thomas M. Snouffer, and sister Amey Snouffer all of the Westerville address, and another sister, Mrs. Suzanne Hard, of Kenosha, Wis.

Funeral arrangements are being made by the Rutherford-Corbin funeral home, 517 High St. Worthington."
