David Rowlatt Newby, 75, succumbed after a two-year battle with Melanoma. David was born in Holywell Green, West Yorkshire, England November 8, 1938 to Hilda (Kershaw) Newby and Clifford Rowlatt Newby.
He was educated in England and attended Keele and Bradford Universities where he graduated with degrees in Mathematics and Physics. Prior to attending university, he held an apprenticeship at age 16 in the research laboratory of B. 7-H in Rugby, Warwickshire, leaving one year early to enroll in university. After graduation he joined Smith's Aviation Division in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, where he worked as a research scientist for three years.
He emigrated to the U.S. in 1966 where he again worked as a research scientist in the R&D lab of Westinghouse Electric in Baltimore, Md. Moving to Santa Clara County, Calif. in 1969 he joined National Semiconductor Corp. starting as a Process Engineer and finally as a Director and General Manager of Operations for Santa Clara, Tucson, and the Philippines.
He married Gretchen Meitzner in 1971. He and his family lived overseas for several years in Algeria and Indonesia while employed by National Semiconductor Corp.
He married Michele Renee Shaw in 1998. In 1999 they retired and moved to a 10-acre property east of Phoenix, Ore. In 2008 they moved to East Medford, Ore.
Athletics was a strong part of David's youth and he returned to it later in life, running in Oregon's 10K's. He also enjoyed soccer and cycling. He was a lifetime student, his muses being music, poetry and history. He believed strongly in public service and was involved with Age Wise Live Well, serving isolated elders in Jackson County. David's was a life of admirable integrity and courage. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
David is survived by his wife, Michele, of Medford, Ore.; a brother, Keith of Shropshire, England; children, Sarah McNulty of San Jose, Calif., Christian Newby of Austin, Texas, and Keith Newby of San Jose, Calif.; and six grandchildren.
A celebration of life is planned for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 25, 2014 at Hillcrest Mortuary, 2001 North Phoenix Rd., Medford.
