G.W. (Wash) Dowell, 90, one of Henderson county's oldest citizens, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. Meredith, here Monday afternoon at 5:55 o'clock. He had been under the care of physicians for several days and his fatal illness followed a stroke of apoplexy, suffered Sunday.

Funeral services were held from the Meredith home on Gauntt street in West Athens on Tuesday at 10:30 o'clock with Rev. R.E. Connell, Methodist pastor of Athens, being assisted by Rev. Ben Jones, Baptist minister of Ben Wheeler. Rev. Jones was an oldtime friend of the deceased. Both pastors eulogized the life of Mr. Dowell, who had been known as one of Henderson county's best beloved citizens. A quartet composed of Mrs. E.J. Prince, Miss Bertha Faulk, Mrs. W.H. Culbertson and Mrs. Alice Thomas sang "Over in the Glory Land", a hymn that had long been a favorite of the deceased.

G.W. Dowell was born in Indiana on April 27, 1843, and lived in that state until he entered the Civil War to serve for four years. While he was serving in the Army his family moved from Indiana to Illinois and following the war he joined them in their new home. Shortly after the Civil War he was married to Miss Mary Catherine Slone, who preceded him in death 27 years ago. Four children were born of this union, all of whom have passed to their reward with the exception of Mrs. E. Meredith of Athens.

In 1876 Mr. Dowell and his family moved from Illinois to Texas, locating in Anderson county, where they lived until 1880, when they moved to Henderson county. Mr. Dowell had made his home here since that time, having engaged in business here prior to his retirement a number of years ago.

In addition to his daughter, Mrs. Meredith, the deceased is survived by a number of nephews and nieces, thirteen living grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

He had been a member of the Methodist church for 75 years.
