Assistant Chief George T. Crockett, age 47, died, August 3, 1923

born November 1, 1876, He was previously a member of the Fame Hose Volunteer Fire Company in Wilmington, DE., and proudly wore badge #698, before being hired by the All Paid Wilmington Fire Dept. on December 1, 1921.

Twenty months after being hired by the WFD, he was fighting a blaze at the Amalgamated Leather Company at 4th and Adams Streets, when he inhaled ammonia fumes. Because of apparent manpower shortages, Chief Crockett like many of todays firefighters, had worked an extended shift. (Forty-eight hours, without relief) Due to the noxious fumes and long duty that summer, Crockett contacted Pneumonia.
