Born Georg Heinrich Baas in Winzeln, Pfalz, Bayern, he was a son of Georg Adam Baas and Baas's first wife, Katharina Magdalena Hammann, the only son out of five children born to this marriage.

He emigrated with his father, step-mother, and several siblings from both of his father's marriages in late-1832 or early 1833. The family arrived in New Orleans, LA and traveled north to Cincinnati.

Heinrich, known in English as Henry, was an early settler of Adams Township, Ripley Co., Indiana, where he came with his father from Cincinnati in the late-1830s.

While in Ripley County, Heinrich was married to Barbara Fenner, who died young, and later, Margaretha Reiboldt. He was the father of over 11 children and remained in Adams Township for the remainder of his life. He is believed to have been a pioneer member of the St. Johannes Church.
