Paul H. Protzenko, 46, of Enfield, beloved husband of Lyse (Coulombe) Protzenko, died tragically on Saturday, July 9, 2011, in Afghanistan while on assignment for the U.S. Department of Defense.

Born in Agawam, Mass., on Oct. 1, 1964, he was the son of Harry and Beverly (Boyce) Protzenko. Paul was a longtime resident of Enfield, where he was a communicant of St. Adalbert Church. Paul loved his country, which he proudly served for six years in the U.S. Army as a sergeant. He then proudly served the State of Connecticut as a Trooper First Class in the state police, retiring after 22 years. Following his retirement, Paul joined MPRI of Virginia, an organization that evaluates situations, designs programs, and trains individuals to take charge of their future. Paul was in Afghanistan training individuals to become police officers. Since he was a child, Paul was an avid martial arts enthusiast, and he loved to ski, travel, and read. He was a member of the Agawam Gun Club, where he enjoyed target shooting. All who knew Paul will miss his very unique sense of humor.

Truly family oriented, Paul was a wonderful son, husband, father, and grandfather who was deeply loved and will always be missed by his parents, Harry and Beverly; wife, Lyse; his children, Jennifer Jeffers, Anthony Santaniello Jr., and Matthew Santaniello, and his wife, Shannon, all of Enfield; and his grandchildren, who were the light of his life, Laura Rogers, Tyler Santaniello, Alyssa-Rea Drinkwater, and Jordan Santaniello. He will also be missed by his sisters, Collette Sparks, and her husband, Ed, of Maine, and Traci Silvester, and her husband, Guy, of Massachusetts; his mother-in-law, Lucielle Coulombe of Granby, Mass.; his two nieces who were his Godchildren, Danielle and Sarah Bellefeuille; three brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; and a niece and nephew.

A Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Paul's life will be held on Monday, July 18, 2011, at 10 a.m. at St. Adalbert Church, 90 Alden Avenue, Enfield (please meet at church).

Paul's family will receive relatives and friends at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, Enfield on Sunday, July 17, from 3 to 8 p.m.

Donations in Paul's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 825 Brook Street, I-91 Tech Center, Rocky Hill, CT 06067-3045.
