Ralph Ritz was born on a farm South of New Salem, North Dakota on December 11, 1906, the son of Carl and Edna Mae (Comstock) Ritz.
At the age of 19, he left home with five dollars in his pocket received from his father, part of which he loaned to his buddy. He started work on the first power line from Hebron to Mandan, where they paid five dollars a day. After completing the line, he worked at the Fort Peck Dam in Montana, later adding sugar factory in Billings, on the railroad, coal mines and sheep herding in various parts of Montana for nine years.
In 1933 he started farming 14 miles South of New Salem. After four years of being a bachelor, he married Helga Anderson Peterson on April 20, 1938 at her parents' home North of Flasher. Helga was born March 11, 1913, the daughter of Erick and Selma Perrson Anderson of Flasher. She was raised by L Fred and Esther Peterson, after the early death of her parents in 1922. Helga worked in the homes of local people helping with children and other household chores.
They moved to the farm South of New Salem where they farmed and raised cattle for 35 years, hard work being a way of life.
Ralph and Helga farmed until the fall of 1973 when they retired and moved to Flasher. They were active in the 55+ Club and United Church of Christ in Flasher and also Bethel Church South of New Salem. Helga died January 28, 1975. Ralph died October 28, 1994. To them five children were born, Roger, Rodney, Ann Marie, Loann, and Rickey. Ann Marie died as a four-day-old infant in 1947.
Roger married Eileen Aune. They live in Bismarck and have two children: Dean and DeAnn. Dean and Julee Farnsworth - Ritz live in Bismarck and have three children: Nicole, Abby and Ian. Nicole and her daughter Hailee live in Minot. Tom and DeAnn Mathern live in Lino Lakes, Minnesota and have two children: Whitney and Erica.
Rodney married Sally Sardeson. Rodney lives in Flasher. Rodney and Sally have three children: Kevin, Tracie and Shauna. Sally lives in Linton. Kevin and Juanita Fisher-Ritz live in Big Spring, Texas and have two children: Nathan and Amber. Nathan lives in Midland, Texas and Amber lives in Las Vegas, Nevada. Tracie married Doug Voight. Tracie and Doug have three children: Maverick, Garrick and Cerasi Voight. Tracie Ritz and Doug Voight both live in Linton.
