BOARDMAN – Major General George William Smith, USMC retired, formerly of New Port Beach, Calif., entered into eternal life on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014, surrounded by loved ones in the peace and comfort of his home.

General Smith was born July 8, 1925, in Harrisburg, Pa., to George Kobler Smith and Myra Holder Smith.

He graduated from Camp Hill High School in 1943, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and fought on Okinawa during World War II. In 1949, General Smith graduated from Dickinson College with a degree in Political Science. He received a commission as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. In 1953, General Smith received his regular commission as a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. His 34-year career included service as Commanding Officer of the Basic School, Quantico, Va.; graduation at the top of his U.S. Army War College class in 1972; Brigade Commander, Kaneohe, Hawaii; and Commanding General Third Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan. General Smith retired in 1977, having received, among other honors, the Silver Star for valor during the Dewey Canyon Campaign in South Vietnam and The Legion of Merit.

General Smith married the love of his life, Nancy Louise Reese, in April 1954. The Smiths were retired in Newport Beach for more than 30 years. They celebrated 60 years together just prior to moving to Boardman this past summer. General Smith was able to visit with his four children during the several weeks and months preceding his death.

He leaves his daughter, Deborah Smith of Pensacola, Fla.; his daughter, Dr. Anne (Dr. Jeff) Stover of Boardman; Brigadier General George W. (Kathleen Howe) Smith Jr., USMC, of Stafford, Va.; and Colonel Andrew H. (Colleen Kelly) Smith, USMC, of Stuttgart, Germany. General Smith leaves 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many friends in Newport Beach and around the world.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Thomas Smith; and his son-in-law, David Smith.

General Smith was an avid fan of golf and football. He played quarterback for the Dickinson College football team and coached the U.S. Marine Corps football team at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

He was a fine golfer who always enjoyed a round of golf with his wife, his sons, and his friends in Hawaii and on the mainland. He most enjoyed any opportunity to celebrate with his family, especially during beach vacations at Cape May, N.J., and in Southern California. General Smith’s wife and children are so thankful for the kind and competent care of Drs. Bhargava Ravi, Daniel Ricciutti and Sudershan Garg. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the entire Hospice of the Valley team. Special thanks to nurse Emma, Nurse Marsha, Jim and Pat.

Major General Smith will be interred with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
