ANNA (DENITTO) PELLEGRINO
Inspiration for restaurant
March 3, 1908 -- Dec. 1, 2005

Anna Pellegrino, whose grandsons named a restaurant for her, died Thursday after a long illness in Mount St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston. She was 97.

Born Anna Denitto in Niagara Falls, she attended local schools.

She was a volunteer with a nutrition program for 15 years while she was living at Spallino Towers, a senior citizens high-rise.

Her family said she loved to laugh and got a special kick out of raising eyebrows with her stories and escapades of years past.

She enjoyed crocheting, particularly afghans for family members and friends.

As a tribute to her, grandsons Richard and David Rodriguez recently opened Pellegrino's, a Niagara Falls restaurant inspired by her love of cooking and sharing of her traditional southern Italian specialties. Richard Rodriguez also cared for her in her later years.

Her husband of 20 years, Floyd, died in 1948.

Survivors include a daughter, Marie "Renee" Rodriguez, and a brother, Orlando "Sonny" Denitto, both of Niagara Falls; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Prayers will be said at 9:45 a.m. today in M.J. Colucci & Son Niagara Funeral Chapel, 2730 Military Road, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, 1413 Pine Avenue.

Entombment will be in Riverdale Cemetery, Lewiston.
