Richard L. Haenke, 88, of Biwabik, formerly of Rugby, N.D., died Aug. 25, 2014, at St. Raphael's Health & Rehabilitation Center in Eveleth.
Richard was born April 18, 1926, to William H. and Gladys (Christensen) Haenke in Duluth. He joined the U.S. Navy upon graduation from Central High School in Duluth, and was put into service as a cook. His lifetime career was that of cook, chef, food and beverage manager and restaurateur. He worked at St. Cloud State University, Empire Builder Railway, the Hotel Duluth in Duluth, Minot State College, and the Ramada Inn in Minot, N.D. He owned/operated the Spiral Café in Hastings, Minn., House of Coates in Coates, Minn., and Andrew's Steakhouse in Rugby, N.D. In addition to his love of cooking, he had a passion for the game of golf and he enjoyed playing card games. He was an active member of the American Legion and Shriner's (Masons) organizations. After retirement, he became involved with volunteer opportunities through Meals on Wheels, the Virginia hospital gift shop, St. Michael's Health & Rehab Center as an activities assistant and helping with pasty production at the Biwabik Community Church.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Therese (Valley), sife Mary (Gergen), daughter, Andrea, and brothers, William and Robert. He is survived by daughters, Shannon (James) Burkhardt of Eden Prairie, MN, Kris (Dale) Wangler of Rugby, ND, and Julie (Brian) Braaten of Colorado Springs; sons, Richard, Jr. of San Tan Valley, AZ and Roger of San Diego, CA.; 14 grandchildren; brothers James of Biwabik, Michael of Oxford, FL, sister Barbara Klein (Jack Sonnicksen) of Plymouth, MN and faithful, loving companion, Margaret Herrmann of Biwabik, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be held at the Biwabik Community Church on September 20, 2014 at 11:00 am.
