He married Catherine Folts at Alder Creek in 1880 and she died Oct 7, 1925.
Besides Mrs. Wheeler, another daughter, Mrs. Maude E. Denton of Utica, and the following, all from Ilion, survive; two daughters, Mrs. Horace Fitzer and Mrs. George St. John; two sons, Harry and Claude Thayer; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
The passing away of her father, George Thayer, 81, former Erie canal boat captain, brings back many poignant memories to Mrs. Horace Fitzer of Prospect Avenue, who can recall long childhood summers spent aboard the "Mabel Irwin", her father's boat. Every spring, late in May, Mr. Thayer stowed his entire family, consisting of his wife, Catherine, and their seven children, Rilla, Harry, Winifred, Maud, Gladys, Claude and William aboard the "Mabel Irwin" and they drifted tranquilly along the placid waters of the Erie Canal until October, when the children had to return to school.
