Our family's world has been shaken off its axis. Our beautiful, gentle, loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Lenore Horvath Higgins peacefully passed on to the next step in her journey after a short stay at Solvay Hospice House on Sunday, April 6, 2014.
Lenore was born on September 8, 1919 and was one of 11 children born to Jesse and Virginia Brown. After graduating from Superior Central High School in 1936 Lenore went on to marry Stephen Horvath in 1942. She worked as a riveter in a San Francisco airplane factory during World War II, and later began her hospital career there. At the end of the war, Lenore returned to Superior and began her family.
Lenore enjoyed league bowling, playing softball, and hosting family gatherings. Her love of dancing and music were a constant joy to her, and she led a healthy, active life while working full time in the Intensive Care Unit at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth. Lenore tenderly cared for her patients, with the same kindness and love she lavished on her family and friends. After retiring, Lenore enjoyed sewing, baking, cooking, snowmobiling, traveling, and hiking. She married Floyd Higgins in 1971, and enjoyed 23 years of marriage until his passing in 1994.
Her later years were spent traveling and included trips to China, Spain, Portugal, Alaska, and cruises in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. During this time she resided in Seattle Washington, where she enjoyed the weather, experiences, and the companionship of a special friend Gene Cushway who passed in 2003.
After returning to Wisconsin, she spent summers with her daughter Suzanne in Cable Wisconsin, and enjoyed quiet outings on Price Lake and walks in the northern forests.
Lenore was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Virginia Brown; brothers, Jesse, Ellis, Eugene, Leland, and Lyland; sisters, Eleanor, Francis, Doris, Avis, a baby who died at birth; and her former husbands, Steve Horvath, and Floyd Higgins.
Lenore was a wonderful, loving woman whose great strength, dignity, stories, and sense of humor will be sorely missed but carried forward by her survivors; Suzanne and Scarlett Rooney, Alan Horvath (Susan), Kate Horvath (Joe Wicklund) Brooke Igl (Eric,) Nolan Igl, Fred, Matt, Dan, and Dane King, and many other extended family across the country. Lenore resided at the Lighthouse in Superior where she continued to enjoy and maintain a wonderful group of friends.
A visitation will be held at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior on Thursday evening April 10th from 5 – 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Cathedral of Christ the King at 11:00 am on Friday April 11th, with a visitation preceding it at 10:00 am.
Following the mass, everyone is invited downstairs to a luncheon at the church.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Lenore's name to the Solvay Hospice House, in Duluth, Minnesota.
