Donald Cook, 91, of Willmar died Monday, July 7 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. His funeral will be at 11 am, Monday, July 14 at the Evangelical Free Church in Willmar. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Donald Arthur Cook was born on May 15, 1923, on a farm near Earlham, Iowa, to Lloyd and Myrtle (Barnett) Cook. At age three, the family moved to the Chicago area, settling in Lisle, Illinois in 1934. Don graduated from Lisle Public School and Downers Grove Community High School, and attended the First Baptist Church in Downers Grove. He became a Christian through Lisle Bible Church and entered Wheaton College in 1942. In 1943, he was called into the US Army as an Aviation Cadet, graduating from Aerial Navigation School as a Second Lieutenant. He served as a navigator in the Pacific Theater in the 311th Troop Carrier Squadron and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain in October of 1946. After re-entering Wheaton College, Don graduated in January 1950 and immediately entered Faith Theological Seminary near Philadelphia. In August of 1950, he married Dorothy Mae True of Lisle, Illinois. Don graduated from seminary in 1953. In June of 1956, he and Dorothy left the US as missionaries, going first to Singapore for language studies and then to Japan in 1957. They served there for sixteen years, primarily in Tokyo and Sapporo. In 1972, they returned to the US with their children, Bill and Donna. They resided in Wheaton, Illinois where Don worked for Chicago Title Insurance Company from 1973 till full retirement in August 2002 and moved to Willmar, Minnesota, to be near their daughter.
Donald is survived by his wife, Dorothy, children: Bill (Rae) Cook of Tampa, FL; Donna (Tony) Cairns of Willmar; and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Shirley True.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and three siblings.
