Mr. Lloyd Maxwell Burgess, 84, of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004. He was born Aug. 29, 1920, in Yadkin County to Thomas Smith Burgess and Cora Gibbs Burgess. Mr. Burgess was one of the owners of Salem Spring Co. and was a member of Salem Lodge and Oasis Temple. He was a founding member of Oldtown Lodge and the Spring Service Association and a charter member of Oldtown Baptist Church. He was a veteran, serving during World War II in the European Theater. He was preceded in death by a sister, Urseal Burgess; and three brothers, Roy R. Burgess, Willie Burgess and Gray Burgess. Surviving are his wife, Thelma Q. Burgess; a daughter, Sandra Stuart of Marietta, Ga.; a son, Barry L. Burgess of Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Nonnie Prim and Eller Stewart; and four grandchildren, Jordan Stuart of Atlanta, Ga., Lindsey Stuart McIlhaney of San Mateo, Calif., and Mallory Burgess and Barry Burgess, both of Richmond, Va. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Oldtown Baptist Church with Dr. Rick Speas officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park with Masonic and military rites given by the District 11 Memorial Honor Guard. Mr. Burgess will lie in state one hour prior to service at the church.
