He was born November 5, 1952 in Connersville, the son of Paul R. and Irene Flint Gulley. He attended Connersville Schools and graduated from Connersville High School. In high school he was a member of both the Men's Varsity Swim Team and Dive Team and qualified to compete in the State Tournament.
A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Navy and upon completing his military service in 1977, he was honorably discharged.
Formerly employed at Design and Manufacturing in the Assembly Department, he later became employed at the Fayette County Courthouse as a custodian and was self-employed for several years.
During his leisure he enjoyed listening to and playing music, as he was an accomplished musician playing the lead guitar. He played in several area bands, including the Cracker Box Palace.
Survivors include a son, Paul J. Gulley of Greenwood and his fiance Jenny James; two grandchildren: Jordan Gulley and Christopher Gulley, both of Warren, Ohio; his former wife, Phyllis Trieschman of Connersville; three step-children Michael Richmond of Richmond and Kevin Duncan and Misty Young, both of Connersville; and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Brittany Gulley.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home, with Pastor Richard Ware of Higher Praise Worship Center officiating. Burial will be in Lick Creek Cemetery, with military rites provided by the Fayette County Veteran's Council Honor Guard. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 12 Noon until the time of services.
Memorial contributions may be made in care of the funeral home to the James R. Gulley Memorial Fund.
