Augustin was a twin to Augustus Bristol. They were born to Elexes (Alexis) and Mary (Barlow) Bristol in Litchfield Co., CT, November 26, 1839. They moved to Carroll County, Illinois with their parents in 1843 when 3 years of age. The 1850 and 1860 Federal Census show the brothers living with their parents in Carroll, Illinois.

On 7 February 1865 Augustin enlisted in the Illinois Infantry, B Company, 147th Regiment under Captain George N. Fay (Hay). He was promoted to Full Corporal, and was mustered out on January 20, 1866 in Savannah, Georgia. Sources: Illinois: Roster of Officers and Enlisted Men.

(Augustin's twin brother, Augustus, enlisted in the Illinois Infantry, D Company, 140th Infantry Regiment on 18 Jun 1864. He was mustered out on 29 Oct 1864 at Camp Fry, Chicago, IL. Another brother Peleg, enlisted 20 Feb 1865 in Company I, Illinois 153rd Infantry Regiment and was mustered out on 21 Sep 1865.)

The 1870 Federal Census shows Augustin and Augustus, age 30, living in Mount Carroll, Carroll, Illinois with their parents.

On 3 May 1873 Augustin married Mary Ann Fish in Savanna, Carroll, Illinois. They had six children:

Laura Bell (1877 - )
Chester Leon (1878 - 1955)
Samuel (1881 - 1932)
Elizabeth May (Bessie) (1884 - 1922 )
John (1886 - )
There may be another son, Ira Kirkland (1880-1892)

From 1880 to 1910 the Federal Census show Augustin and Mary living in Carroll County, Illinois raising their family. "The History of Carroll County, Illinois (1850-1880)" states that Augustin was engaged in farming and stock raising and owned, together with his brother, Augustus, 450 acres of land.

About 1911 Augustin and Mary moved to the Firesteel, South Dakota area. The 1920 Federal Census shows Augustin and Mary, ages 80 and 66 living in Township 18, Corson, South Dakota

On 5 March 1924 Augustin died in Firesteel and had a military burial. Later Mary Ann had his remains moved to the cemetery in Mobridge, South Dakota.
