Leonard served as a 2nd Lieutenant & Co-Pilot on B-17G (#42-39821), 570th Bomber Squadron, 390th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Oxford County, Maine prior to the war.

Leonard was "Killed In Action" when his B-17 was shot down by German Flax during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart. His remains were found in a quarry at Ispringen, North West of Pforzheim, Germany.

He was the only member of his crew that died. The rest all became POW's.
