The death took place at his home in Torbrook Mines on Friday morning, Jan 11th. of John Stevens from plural pneumonia. The deceased was born in Newfoundland and was fifty years of age. He was twice married, his first wife being Mrs. Jennie Hansford. Of this union three children were born: Winnie (Mrs. William Morgan) of Timmons, Ont; Scriven at home, and Walter, who passed away some years ago. His second wife was a Miss Fredericks of Torbrook, together with three small children survive. He is also survived by five step-children, Isobel and Frank Hansford, living in Coaticook, Que; Edmund Hansford of Winnipeg; Ralph Hansford of Toronto, Ont; Cecil Hansford of Wolfville, N.S. Two other step-sons, Albert Hansford, died in England, as a result of overseas service, and Percy Hansford was killed in a railroad accident in Winnipeg several years ago. A sister living in Newfoundland and a brother in Glace Bay are other survivors. Funeral was held Tuesday afternoon in the United Church of Canada in Torbrook Mines, Rev. Theodore Ross of Kingston officiating. Interment was in the family lot adjoining the church.

On January 11th, the Angel of Death entered into the Stevens home and carried away in her bosom the soul of the husband and Father from the home. Mr. Stevens was born in Newfoundland in 1885. He came to Torbrook when quite young. His first wife was the widow of Mr. Alfred Hansford. There were three children in his first family, Walter, who predeceased him several years ago, Winnie, in Timmons, Ont.; and Cervine, at home. Mr. Stevens married Jennie Fredericks several years later, he has three small children, in the second family, Barbara, Glenwood, and baby Jack. The funeral service was held from the United Church, Torbrook Mines, Mr. Ross, Pastor of that church, spoke comforting words from the 9th chapter of Jeremiah 23rd and 24th. Mr. Stevens was a member of the I.O.O.F. Brotherhood, Middleton. The Brotherhood took charge of the service. Music was provided by the Torbrook Male Choir. "Asleep in Jesus" was sung at the house; and at the church "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder". A solo by Mr. Martin "It's Goodnight Here but Good Morning up There" male quartet, "Rock of Ages", choir "Will the Circle be Unbroken." The floral tributes were as follows: - Broken Circle - wife; pillow, Cervine; wreath, Brotherhood. Cross, brother Fred and family; spray - United Church; wreath - Winnie, Bill and Frank; spray - Cecil and family. Mr. Stevens leaves to mourn their loss a wife and five children, Winnie, Cervin, Barbara, Glenwood and little Jack, besides a large circle of friends. Interment was in United Church cemetery. We shall meet beyond the river, In that bright and golden span.
