Dictator. He was the strongman of Venezuela for 19 years, during three terms as President (1870 to 1877, 1879 to 1884, and 1886 to 1888) and through the puppet administrations he installed in his place. In 1889 he was overthrown in a coup and spent the rest of his life in Paris exile.
