Nell was born in Sanish, N.D., in 1924 to Edwin and Mary Larson. Nell attended college in Sioux Falls, S.D., earning her teaching degree. She then relocated with her family to Brush Prairie, Wash.
There she met the love of her life, Lloyd Powell. The couple married and then headed to Los Angeles, where Lloyd attended LIFE Bible College. During this time Nell worked as a riveter in the Naval shipyards. After graduation they took their first church in Greenfield, Tenn., where son Dave was born. While living in Tennessee, Nell taught in a local school. Nell also assisted in classrooms here in Crescent City at Foursquare Christian Preschool and at Bess Maxwell. She was lovingly referred to as "Grandma Nell" by many of those children. Over the years she and Lloyd pastored or assisted in many Foursquare Churches, including churches in Boulder, Colo., where Mark, Tim and Susie were born, California, Montana, and Washington. Nell was a licensed and ordained minister and received her 60 Year Award for ministry from the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel. Lloyd and Nell were on staff at the Crescent City Foursquare Church for many years. Nell had a wonderful gift of being happy and content wherever she was. Someone asked her once where she liked living the most, as they had lived quite a few different places. She said, "I guess wherever I was," meaning, she learned to appreciate each place, its people and what made that town or city special.
Nell was famous for her smile and warm, loving ways. She loved people more than anything in this life and went out of her way to let people know she cared about them. She was a hero to her children and grandchildren, always having time for them and finding ways to help in very real and practical ways. Their family often took people into their home for months or even years at a time to help them through rough patches. Sharing and caring were a part of her DNA.
Sweet and kind to the core, her very last words on this earth were "Thank you" to her family for caring for her in her last days. A very bright light has been extinguished here on earth but will shine forever in eternity. She will be missed.
She is survived by her children: Dave and Lavonne Powell, Mark and Kelli Powell, Tim and Kathy Powell, and Pat and Susie Hawkins; grandchildren: Jonathan (Jessica) Powell, Erin (David) Powell-Hanline, Reid (Jen) Powell, Jessica (Canyon) Dauber, Andrew (Amber) Powell, Michael (Chelsea) Hawkins, Craig Powell, Karen Powell, Patrick (Amanda) Hawkins, Kevin (Jael) Hawkins, Gabriel Powell and Ann Powell; 11 great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers and sister, her husband Lloyd and grandson Taylor Powell.
A benevolent fund has been set up through Crescent City Foursquare Church where monies may be donated in Nell's name for a family in need.
Services will be held Monday, Oct. 27, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Crescent City Four Square Church 144 Butte St.
